She is a registered Physiotherapist and Clinic Director at the Lifemark Sports Medicine Center at the Richmond Oval. She is also the Director of Quality for Lifemark Health in BC. Melina received her Masters in Physical Therapy from the University of British Columbia, following the completion of a Bachelor of Human Kinetics in Exercise Science. She is certified in acupuncture by the Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute and is certified to practice Dry Needling. Melina has been practicing in sport medicine since 2008 and has since pursued numerous post graduate courses studying the science of movement. She has completed training and mentorship programs specifically related to the Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) and Functional Movement Screening (FMS). Her focus when treating patients is to discover the root cause contributing to injury, rather than just treating the symptoms. Melina has had experience treating a wide variety of patients ranging from recreational and professional athletes to clinical populations. Melina combines her clinical skills with education by lecturing to community groups, other health care professionals and sports organizations about injury prevention. Melina has also been involved with the UBC Masters in Physical Therapy as a lab instructor for the Neuroanatomy program, as an examiner for the Internationally Educated Physiotherapist Exam Preparation Program as well as the National Physiotherapy Licensing Exam. In her spare time she enjoys cycling, running, skiing and travelling. Presentation: Melina will be presenting on the importance of movement screening and assessment for athletes. She will be sharing her own personal experience on how movement screening and assessment has helped her in clinical practice to identify indicators for propensity for injury and to identify underlying causes of movement dysfunction. She will be speaking specifically to the Functional Movement Screen as well as the Selective Functional Movement Assessment. Melina has been using the FMS and the SFMA as part of her practice since 2008. After this presentation you will have a good understanding of what movement screening entails and why you would choose to incorporate it into your Sport Massage practice. There will be a lecture followed by a presentation as well as Q & A Session.
